Private Healthcare in Mallorca: GHIC, EHIC and Travel Insurance Questions

INTERNATIONAL VISITORS · HEALTHCARE ARRANGEMENTS
A health card, a travel policy and a private appointment are different things. Understanding that distinction before a consultation in Mallorca can prevent confusion. This guide helps UK visitors prepare their questions; the insurer or relevant public authority must confirm what applies to your circumstances.
What a GHIC or EHIC is for
GOV.UK explains that a valid GHIC or EHIC relates to medically necessary state healthcare during a temporary visit to Spain, under the applicable conditions. It does not cover private treatment and does not replace travel insurance. Read the official guidance and check your current entitlement rather than assuming that possession of a card means every provider is covered.
Identify which service you are arranging
Before a non-emergency appointment, establish whether you are arranging private care or using the state system. Ask the provider about the nature of the appointment and speak to the insurer about any authorisation requirements. A familiar language, a hotel recommendation or a convenient location does not by itself establish that a service falls within your cover.
Questions for your travel insurer
Which situations are included in my policy? Do I need approval before a private consultation or an investigation? Which documents are required for a claim? Are pre-existing conditions subject to particular conditions? Who should I contact if further care is recommended? Keep the answers and relevant reference numbers securely. Do not assume that reimbursement or direct billing is available.
How Galatzó Health discusses arrangements
For private care at Galatzó Health, availability and fees are discussed individually with the team. Insurance reimbursement must be confirmed directly with your insurer. Tell the team if your insurer needs particular documentation, while confirming the insurer’s requirements directly with them.
Do not delay emergency care for paperwork
If you have a medical emergency in Spain, call 112. Sorting out an authorisation or finding a private appointment should not delay urgent help. For a planned consultation, it is useful to keep your policy details, identification and relevant clinical records accessible and to agree how any follow-up will be organised after you leave the island.
